Ruth Schmid, PhD, is Vice President Marketing at SINTEF Industry in Trondheim, Norway with special responsibility for the area of medical technology, including nanomedicine. SINTEF is one of Europe's largest independent non-profit research institute. Her present research activities include the preparation and characterisation of micro- and nanoparticles by various technologies and from a wide variety of materials (including biodegradable polymers and hybrid materials), as well as the surface modification of polymers and polymer particles by wet-chemistry, to introduce tailor-made properties. A focus area is the encapsulation and immobilisation of liquids and solids from emulsions, for protection and controlled release, applied to various market areas. Examples of encapsulated substances are liquid crystals, magnetic iron oxides, insect repellents and fragrances. There is special focus on applied research and product orientated solutions. A field of special interest is nanomedicine, especially targeted drug delivery and imaging, where SINTEF-owned technology platforms based on polymeric nanoparticles are developed.
Ruth Schmid is a Swiss citizen living in Norway since 1979. She gained her Diploma (1975) and PhD (1979) in Natural Sciences at ETH Zürich, Switzerland. She is a member of ACS, CRS (President 2016-2017), the European Technology Platform in Nanomedicine and the EARTO working group "Emerging Technologies for Healthcare".
