Alfred Fahr (Professor and Chair Emeritus, Institute of Pharmacy, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, Germany) studied Biology and Physics at the Universities of Constance (Germany) and Oxford (U.K.). After his PhD in the Biophysics group of Prof. P. Läuger at Constance University in 1982, he was research associate at the Free University in Berlin (1982-1986). From 1986 to 1996 he was head of laboratories at Sandoz Pharma AG (today Novartis AG) in the departments Biopharmaceuticals, Human Pharmacology and Drug Delivery Systems. In the same period, he obtained the Postdoctoral lecturing qualification (“Habilitation") in Pharmacy at the Faculty of Science of the University Basel. He was appointed as professor for Pharmaceutical Technology at the Philipps-Universität Marburg (Germany) in 1996. From 2002 - 2015 he was holding the chair in Pharmaceutical Technology at the Friedrich-Schiller-University in Jena (Germany). Since 2015 he is Professor Emeritus and founder of a consulting bureau. His research focuses on mechanisms of phospholipid-based drug delivery systems.
